OCT Scanning

OCT Scans of the Macula and Optic Nerve

These are most important for:

  • Macular degeneration
  • Diabetes
  • Glaucoma, High eye pressure
  • High spectacle prescriptions
  • Persons with family history
  • Symptoms of flashes &/or Floaters
  • Head or eye injuries
  • Headaches
  • Optic nerve disease
  • Unexpectedly poor vision
  • Persons considering laser eye treatment

Baseline OCT test for healthy eyes:

Nolke Opticians would advise all patients to have a baseline OCT carried out, even with normal healthy eyes.

Any eye conditions in later life may be detected earlier by virtue of comparison of the scans.

OCT 3D Retinal Scanning Technology

What is it?

OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) is the next generation technology for imaging the internal structures of the eye. It is a state of the art scanner that creates what could be described as an optical ultrasound 3D image of the retina inside the eye. The retina is the light sensitive area at the back of the eye, equivalent to the fi lm in a traditional camera and it has 10 layers.

Before OCT we could only see the top layer. With OCT for the first time we can actually see below the surface of the retina and view the microscopic layers beneath.

What is involved?

This scan is easy to conduct; is non-invasive, painless, simple and only takes a few seconds to complete. It is suitable for people of all ages and it can pick up eye problems at a much earlier stage, usually allowing you better treatment options and a better visual result.

Why would I do it?

Many other eye conditions can also be diagnosed with OCT and of course it can also confirm that all is well and the eye is healthy.

For example, OCT can be used to differentiate between the wet and dry types of macular degeneration which can help to decide whether treatment may be possible.

Any areas that may be unusual can then be measured and, later, repeat scans can be lined up with the original so that changes are measured in an accurate way.

At Nolke Opticians we believe in offering the very best eyecare and recommend that everyone should have an initial complete OCT assessment which will provide baseline readings and can then be used as a reference from which future readings will be compared. This will allow us the greatest opportunity to confi rm your eye’s health by detecting any evidence of change at the earliest stage.
